One fundamental property for the sound propagation in gases is that a signal transported by sound waves does not change its form. When considering plates and flexural waves (bending waves) this property does not hold anymore. The signal changes form due to different wave speed (i.e. dispersion) for different frequencies.
This is demonstrated in this example for two wave-guides with and without dispersion.
